The Winter Olympics are held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Concordia was represented by a student and an alum who carried the Olympic torch. Junior at the time Alexis Read and 01' grad Cassie Hanwell got to carry the torch in Montana on its way to Salt Lake City.

The T.V. show American Idol is first aired on Fox. In the shows second season Callie Kimball, a junior at Concordia at the time, made it all the way to the third round before she was eliminated.

The space shuttle Columbia disintegrates upon reentry killing all astronauts on board.
